The last basement we finished here was 400 square feet under a standard eight-foot ceiling, which is a fair picture of what these houses tend to give you to work with: enough room to be worth doing properly, not so much that the budget runs away from you. The ceiling went black. That is close to the cheapest move available in a basement, because a dark ceiling stops your eye at the walls rather than at a low lid, and eight feet starts reading as more than eight feet.
